Whether it's a major hurricane or leaky plumbing, flooding is a sure
way to destroy your hard drive, but that doesn't mean your data is gone

- Do not attempt to apply power to the drive
- Do not attempt to dry the drive
- Hard drives are not totally sealed, and they will take in water

- If possible, keep the drive submerged or at the very least in an airtight
container
- Use plenty of bubble wrap when packaging the drive for shipment
The recovery process in flooded hard drives is exponentially more complex
than a typical recovery. There are stages in which the drive is cleaned,
and then in most cases the platters need to be removed. The platters are
cleaned in a solution, moved to another solution, then moved to a third
and sometimes fourth solution to remove any and all contamination from
the surface. The focus then shifts on to rebuilding another drive case
with the components of the flooded drive. Restacking the platters one-by-one
and then realigning them so that their vertical and horizontal axis' are
perfect. Only then do we have a sufficient chance of recovering any useable
data.
