Common problems with Maxtor hard drives, specifically 40GB models, is system area damage. Many times this type of failure will manifest itself with a "hard disk fail" error, and in the bios the drive will simply be seen as N40P. N40P is the common family of 40GB hard drives, and they are especially prone to system area corruption. The system area is like the operating system for a hard drive, and it controls how the hard drive reads and writes data. With the help of highly specialized equipment we can work at the system level of any drive, and we can correct many of the problems that occur. Once we are able to repair the corrupted modules within the system area, we can then proceed with recovering the data from your drive.

We can provide data recovery on any size or model Maxtor hard drive, including those listed below:

  • Maxtor DiamondMax Plus 8 6K040L0 40GB 7200 RPM IDE Ultra ATA133

Maxtor Corporation NYSE: MXO is world's third largest (as of December 2005) manufacturer of computer hard disks.

Maxtor targets both the server and desktop market, concentrating on disk capacity more than disk speed for desktops. They started in 1982 as a specialty disk maker, manufacturing large, fast hard drives for servers and power users. In 1990, they entered the mass market with their purchase of bankrupt MiniScribe; the transition was a tough one, with the early products of this union (notably the 7120 3.5" 120MB drive) having many QA and design problems. Later products managed to sell well despite the initial problems, and in 1996 they completely redesigned their drive lines, introducing the DSP-based "DiamondMax" series, which are currently regarded as some of the best ATA drives, quality-wise.

Maxtor sold the rights to their original "XT"-series drives to a company called Sequel in the mid-1990s, thus exiting the server SCSI drive market; around this time, SCSI versions of the 7000 series drives were also discontinued. In 2000, Maxtor purchased Quantum's hard drive business. This move made them larger than their rivals (notably Seagate Technology), and also returned them to the server-SCSI market.

Maxtor, in recent years, like many other hard drive makers, has been expanding into the external hard disk market, such as the Maxtor One-Touch II personal hard drive that is marketed to be convenient external storage for the home user.

Maxtor had initially made efforts to step into the 2.5" (notebook format) hard disk market, but in the beginning of 2005, new management made the surprising decision to discontinue development in this field. This was considered by many to be a particularly peculiar move, since the market for such hard drives (mainly notebooks and mp3 players) was already experiencing rapid growth, with no signs of slowing down in the forseeable future.

The TiVo utilizes a Maxtor 40-GB hard disk drive for its local storage.

In December 2005 Maxtor confirmed that it was to be acquired by its rival Seagate. The deal is worth $1.9 billion.
